Manga Shakespeare competition at Athens Children's and Young Adults' Book Fair
MANGA SHAKESPEARE COMICS COMPETITION
In February 2009 an innovative Manga Shakespeare Comics Competition at Athens Children's Book Festival came to a close. The contest was run by The British Council in collaboration with Eleftherotypia's comics supplement ΕΝΝΕΑ and UK graphic novel publisher SelfMadeHero. 44 valid entries were received from all over Greece and the very high standard of the artwork submitted made the selection process particularly difficult.
The task was to illustrate a scene from a Shakespearean play in manga style, recreating it in a world that we can relate to today.
The competition was open to all permanent residents of Greece between the ages of 12 and 25 regardless of nationality. Entries could be made in Greek or English
This ebook compiles all the submitted entries alongside the winner and those that were highly commended.
The panel of judges were Emma Hayley (Director SelfMadeHero), Aggelos Mastorakis (Chief Editor of Eleftherotypia's comics supplement ENNEA) and Giorgos Botsos (comics author and director of the Sketch, Comics and Cartoon programme at AKTO).
The first prize went to:
* Sofia Vini for her excellent work on Romeo and Juliet (the balcony scene).
The next five best entrants were awarded a distinction are:
* Evangelia Mori for her work on the fight scene from Romeo and Juliet.
* Lydia Stivakti for her work on the three witches scene from Macbeth.
* Evgenia Koumaki for her work on the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet.
* Konstantinos Vasiliadis for his work on the transformation of Bottom scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
* Panayotis Frangoulis for his work on the transformation of Bottom scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Thank you to all the young comics artists who entered the competition. Congratulations to the winner and the five runners-up for their excellent Manga Shakespeare work!
